In England, the choice between becoming a solicitor or a barrister is like two sides of the same coin. Both allow you to work in the legal field, represent the rights of individuals or entities, draft legal documents, and practice law. However, each path offers distinct status and requires a unique route to qualification.
Interviewer: Hi, Noreen. Can you introduce yourself and give us some background on when you took the SQE2 exam and how long you prepared for it?
Noreen: I sat the exam in April 2023 and received my results in August 2023, confirming my passing.
I decided to embark on becoming a solicitor in England & Wales because in 2018 I was heading the legal department for the U.S. and United Kingdom for a start-up.
Before starting to prepare for the OSCE (SQE2), I spent a lot of time looking for sources to ‘understand’ it better. However only after going through OSCEsmart’s sources providing detailed information about each assessment, I started to feel confident.
Qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales requires thorough preparation and a significant time commitment. Candidates often ask us how much time they need to prepare for the QLTS assessment, and we are starting to see more and more similar enquiries for the SQE.
In 2012 I came to the UK to do the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and then the Legal Practice Course (LPC). I was practising international commercial arbitration, mainly under LCIA rules, and came to law school directly from practice.
