Frequently asked questions about the SQE
The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is the national assessment every aspiring solicitor in England and Wales must pass to qualify. Introduced by the SRA in September 2021, it replaced the LPC route and is split into two stages: SQE1, which tests legal knowledge, and SQE2, which tests practical legal skills.
SQE1 assesses Functioning Legal Knowledge through two multiple-choice papers of single best answer questions. SQE2 assesses practical skills such as client interviewing, advocacy, legal drafting, legal writing, case and matter analysis, and legal research across a series of oral and written stations.
Most candidates prepare for around 6 to 12 months, depending on their legal background and how much time they can study each week. A structured plan built on active recall and regular timed mocks is far more effective than passive reading, and it is exactly how our courses are designed.
No. You need a degree in any subject (or an equivalent qualification), together with two years of Qualifying Work Experience. Non-law graduates and career changers can prepare for and pass the SQE, and our programmes are built to support candidates from every background.
Yes. Foreign-qualified lawyers can qualify as solicitors of England and Wales through the SQE and may be eligible for exemptions depending on their existing qualifications. We provide dedicated coaching for international and foreign-trained candidates.
