SQE2 self-practice written mocks: Writing, Drafting, CMA, Research
🔴 DEFINITION: SQE2 self-practice written mocks are structured bundles of mock exercises, organised in a deliberate sequence and format to give aspiring solicitors substantial, exam-focused written practice before the SQE2.
At the Academy, these are offered in four formats:
A. Skills Lectures
B. Case Studies
C. Seminar Studies
D. Mini-Mocks
Each format targets different aspects of writing technique, legal application, structure, and client focus, helping candidates build confidence progressively.
A. Skills Lectures
Format: Video / podcast with slide notes, accompanied by mock questions for self-practice.
Subjects: All practice areas
SQE2 Exams Covered: Legal Writing, Legal Drafting, Legal Research
- 5 Drafting lectures + 17 SQE2 Drafting mocks (self-practice)
- 1 Research lecture + 3 SQE2 Research mocks (self-practice)
- 1 Writing lecture + 1 SQE2 Writing mock (self-practice)
Total: 20 SQE2 mocks across all subjects
These focus on what examiners expect and how to deliver it in practice. You learn how to approach each SQE2 written station, including practical legal components such as key phrases for different drafts, required formalities in legal writing, and common examiner expectations. You then practise using the mock exercises attached to each lecture.
B. Case Studies (5)
Formats: Legal Writing, Legal Drafting, CMA, Legal Research
Quantity: 20+ tasks (new tasks added regularly)
Subjects: All practice areas
These are mini-courses built around a single practical scenario, designed for self-study or group practice. As the case progresses, you receive partner-style tasks that closely reflect real legal practice.
The cases are additionally supported by:
- Short explanatory videos
- MCQs
- Flashcards with key legal tests
- Revision points
- Exam-focused answer structures
This format provides a guided pathway through the case, allowing you to consolidate everything covered in the Skills Lectures, with an additional and specific focus on CMA.
WHY THIS TRAINING WORKS (IMPORTANT)
🧩 A Complete System — Not Isolated Exercises: This training is delivered in a course format, meaning it is designed to be used as one integrated system, not as disconnected tasks or random practice.
🏋️♀️ Training vs Exam Simulation —These exercises are not exact replicas of exam conditions — although you may attempt them that way if you wish. Instead, they are deliberate training tools, similar to how athletes train in a gym:
lifting different weights, practising specific movements, and building strength progressively — all with one ultimate goal:
to perform confidently and pragmatically on the exam day.
C. Seminar Studies (3)
Formats: Legal Writing, CMA
Quantity: 6
Subjects: Business, Property, Wills & Probate
These are video-based sessions covering multiple shorter scenarios. A solicitor guides you through each scenario, asks questions, explains the correct approach, and sets follow-up tasks.
You first engage in structured case analysis through recorded seminar videos, supported by practical explanations, documents, and forms. You are then required to formalise your answers in writing, such as drafting an email or CMA, based on the issues discussed.
This format provides organised, solicitor-led training, bridging analysis and written application under exam-focused conditions.
D. Mini-Mock Bundles (3)
Formats: Extracts from Legal Writing and CMA
Quantity: 25+ tasks (new tasks added regularly)
Subjects: All practice areas
These are final-stage drills designed to sharpen specific exam skills, including typing speed, client focus, and accurate identification and application of relevant facts.
The training is deliberately broken into focused skill chunks, while still exposing you to challenging tasks that test attention to detail and understanding of exam nuances.
