You may already know that LPC grads statistically underperform in the SQE — but not because they’re weak candidates. In fact, they’re often very strong. The issue?
Many rely solely on LPC or one-size-fits-all prep providers.
These generic routes often overlook the specific needs of LPC grads.
⚠️ Problem: Statistically, LPC grads underperform in the SQE2.
WHY?
The SQE covers a broader syllabus than the LPC — and the law may have changed since you studied. Relying solely on past knowledge leaves many LPC grads unprepared for today’s SQE2 exam.
LPC-trained skills reflect the level expected of a trainee solicitor — but SQE2 assesses you at the standard of a day-one qualified solicitor. That’s a leap many underestimate. Check out the Statement of Solicitor Competence.
SQE2 is a simulated skills-based assessment where success hinges on exam tactics and technique. That’s why 1-to-1 mocks with those who’ve passed are crucial — to master both the law and how to deliver it under pressure.

If you’re still hoping to qualify through the LPC route instead of SQE, the window hasn’t been completely shut… but it’s definitely more of a cat flap than a wide-open door. Here’s the deal:
Think of it as catching the last legal qualification train before the station changed to SQE Central. If you’re already on board, you can still follow the familiar LPC + Training Contract route. But if you missed those dates… welcome to the brave new SQE world.
It turns out, swapping the LPC for the SQE hasn’t been all smooth sailing — especially if you’ve already done the LPC. Legal Cheek reports that many LPC grads feel like they’ve been left standing at the bus stop while the legal profession zooms off in a shiny new SQE express train.
The stats don’t exactly soothe the nerves either: in January 2025, only 56% of SQE1 candidates passed (60% for first-timers). SQE2 looks rosier at 75% overall, but when you combine both exams, the success rate drops to around 42%. And here’s the kicker — white candidates passed SQE1 at 70%, while only 37% of Black candidates did, raising important questions about fairness and support.
For LPC graduates, it’s a bit like being invited to the party, only to find the playlist has changed, the snacks are gone, and you’re being asked to learn a whole new dance routine. The profession may need to rethink how it welcomes everyone to the floor.
750+ future solicitors have had enough of the SQE status quo. They signed a petition asking for changes – think lower costs, better mental health support, and maybe just one official set of past papers to ease the mystery.
The reply? Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman basically told them to toughen up, calling the petition “overly sensitive” in tone. That comment lit up social media and triggered a lively back-and-forth between politicians, students, and the wider legal world.
Whatever your view, the debate has made one thing clear: the SQE isn’t just a set of exams anymore – it’s becoming a full-on political talking point.
