What is the SQE?
The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is the new exam you need to pass to become a solicitor in England and Wales. It’s open to a wide range of candidates, including international students and those from non-law backgrounds.
The SQE has two parts:
SQE1 tests legal knowledge
SQE2 tests practical legal skills (like client interviewing and writing)
To take the SQE, you need:
A university degree (in any subject) or an equivalent qualification
To pass both SQE1 and SQE2
To complete two years of qualifying legal work experience
To meet the SRA’s character and suitability requirements
You don’t need a law degree — just the commitment to learn and prepare.
